Course Policies

Absences

Students enrolled in a Dance Program course will be allowed one absence for the semester. Each additional absence will negatively impact the student's final grade. The rate at which each absence after the first one affects the student’s grade will be determined by the individual instructor. However, for all classes, the following rules apply:

  • For all students enrolled in Dance Program major courses,* more than 3 absences throughout the semester will result in a failing grade.
  • For all students enrolled in Dance Program elective courses, more than 5 absences throughout the semester will result in a failing grade.

Please be aware that the first allowed absence must be used for illness, injury, personal or family emergency, or observation of religious holidays—in other words, one absence is all you get, so use it wisely. It is also the student’s responsibility to notify their instructor at the beginning of the semester of any absences that will be taken for religious observances.

*  Major courses include:  Modern Dance 111, 112, 211, 212, 311; Ballet 125, 225, 325; Dance Perf Workshop 155; World Dance Cultures 165; Dance Production Lab 171; Writing Dance Perf 200; Music Fundamentals for Dancers 241; Movement Comp /Perf/Visual Art 255; Dance History I 265, Dance Composition II 355; Sound Design 420

Response Papers

All students enrolled in a Dance Program course must attend two designated dance concerts (see below) presented during that semester. Students will document their attendance at each concert with their ticket and program, and a written paper responding to the concert. These papers must be 1-2 pages in length, typed in 12 pt. font and double-spaced, and are due two weeks after the concert date.

  • All students enrolled in Dance Program major courses will write a response paper for each concert—a total of 2 papers.
  • Students enrolled in dance elective courses will write 1 response paper. Class activities for the second required dance concert will be determined by the instructor.

For all response papers, students may choose three of the following questions to answer:

  1. What did you discover about dance from viewing this concert? Give specific examples that led you to this observation
  2. What have you learned about yourself from this concert experience? Describe the impact viewing the concert had on you.
  3. Give a specific example(s) of a piece in the concert that introduced a concept of performance that was different from what you have previously experienced.
  4. What did you find most challenging or compelling in the concert, and why?
