Personal Biography

Karen McShane-Hellenbrand, M.F.A., Faculty Associate. She teaches a wide range of classes for the Dance Department. In addition, she serves the Dance Department’s Outreach and Recruitment efforts. Karen is an active choreographer and performer. Her lifelong professional goals have been to promote access to dance education for children and adults and to embody professionalism as an artist/educator.

Teaching Interests

Karen teaches Modern and Ballet technique, Dance for Physical Education majors, Teaching Dance to Adults, Creative Dance for Children, Rhythmic Training and Ballroom. Developing a hybrid technique to train athletes has been an ongoing hobby.

I introduced using movement as a tool to teach music concepts and also how to integrate both music and movement into the general curriculum.

    • National Water Dance Project Statewide Coordinator
      Dates of Membership: Sep. 2012 - April 2014
      Accomplishments: The National Water Dance Project is a national community based event that will have educational, environmental and artistic impact. Looking at the power of dance to effect social change. The structure is based on the Florida Waterways Dance Project, a statewide, simultaneous site-specific performance presented at various water sites around Florida in 2011 and live streamed on the web. As statewide coordinator, I will maintain communication between the anchor schools in their state.
