Summer Dance Pre-Collegiate Invitational
June 16-18, 2017
The UW-Madison Summer Dance Pre-Collegiate Invitational is a summer dance weekend intensive for studios/dance programs--their pre-collegiate students and studio directors/teachers. This three-day intensive offers the opportunity to produce and showcase studio repertory work at historic Lathrop Hall in the Margaret H'Doubler Performance Space and features a variety of master classes in Contemporary Dance, Ballet, Pilates, African and Asian traditional forms and more.
Students work directly with faculty in a rigorous choreolab to produce new choreography that culminates in a final performance on stage. Classes are designed to give dancers a chance to study with world-class faculty and to develop ideas and concepts for dynamic choreography using the state-of-the-art facilities at the UW-Madison Dance Department.
All classes will take place in Lathrop Hall, 1050 University Avenue, Madison WI. The following types of classes will be scheduled throughout the weekend.
Mind/Body Practice Course
May include Pilates, Zena Rommett Floor Barre™, or Yoga.
Will include Modern/Contemporary, Ballet, and may include other techniques.
Traditional and Social/Popular Dance Forms
May include African, Chinese, Hip Hop, Javanese, Ballroom, or Caribbean Jazz.

Individual students MUST also register. Note that although there is no Studio Fee, there is a registration fee for students (Regular:$100; Late:$150 - see fee schedule below).
Studio Registration - Open February 9-May 15, 2017
Studios must fill out the online application. Applications will be open between February 9, 2017 to May 15, 2017. Note that although there is no Studio Fee, there is a registration fee for students (Regular: $100; Late: $150 - see fee schedule below).
We typically have space to accommodate 100 dance students. Past participant studios will receive priority, however, we urge you to fill out your application early so that we can accommodate new studio groups. We consider studio applications on a first come, first served basis. Studios should note that one adult supervisor must be on the premises at all times for every 10 students in attendance during the event.
Studios will be notified of their application status after it is submitted. In the event that we have reached capacity, we will maintain a waiting list. If you are interested in participating or have questions, contact Kelly Kwiatkowski at email@example.com or (608) 262-2353.
Student Registration - Open February 9-June 1, 2017
Studios should send the link to the student online registration form to students. That link may be sent to students at any time during the registration period. Once students receive the link, they may fill out their online registration and mail payment. Fees for student registration are listed below.
Each student dance participant must pay a registration fee, there is no overall studio fee.
Regular registration; $100 (payment no later than April 30, 2017).
- Late registration; $150 (payment between May 1, 2017 and June 1, 2017).
Checks should be payable to: UW-Madison Dance Dept. Payment must be post-marked by the deadline.
Participants are responsible for their own transportation, lodging and meals.
In addition to online registration, it is mandatory that each participant--this includes students AND the accompanying studio director/teachers--download, fill out and sign the risk statement and the media release form. For individuals under 18, a parent or guardian signature is required on these forms. We ask that these forms be sent to us in advance with the registration fee. Instructions will be provided during the student registration process. These documents are REQUIRED and participants will be unable to participate without these forms.
The weekend features three performances in the 240-seat Margaret H'Doubler Performance Space.
Friday evening we present a curated concert of studio work. Studios/dance programs will be asked to submit the title of the work to be presented and the approximate length of the work, the name of the choreographer, and the list of the performers. Saturday afternoon will be a showing of Dance Department works and a talkback session. On Sunday afternoon, beginning at 2:30 p.m., each choreolab will present its final work. Performances will take place in the Margaret H'Doubler Performance Space.
Immediately following the Repertory Showing, participants are invited to meet other studio teachers and directors, current UW-Madison students as well as the UW-Madison dance faculty in the Virginia Harrison Parlor for dinner.
Saturday Lunch & Department Info Session
Lunch will be served in the Virginia Harrison Parlor, during which Karen McShane-Hellenbrand will present information about the Dance Department and studying dance at UW-Madison.
Sunday Ice Cream Social
We will close the weekend with an ice cream social, complete with Babcock ice cream, made right here at UW-Madison! Ice Cream will be served immediately following the Choreolab Showing.
